Bad Mascot, Sit, Sit!

Well, it seems that the whole Native American mascot controversy continues.

Fighting Illini

Myself, I've decided to be politically incorrect and call it tons of ado about nothing much, to munge up the Bard.

You see, it seems that some nationalities are okay to lampoon, but others aren't.

So here I'm thinking, "What the hell, maybe I've got an axe to grind."

How about this:

Boston Celtics?

What's with the f*in' leprechaun up there, eh? Ionsaitheach as ifreann, I say. Bar them from post season play! Oh, well, I guess they do that on their own.

Well, how about this:

Fighting Irish?

That sure ain't named for the state, and you can't tell me that all those players of various black descent (African-American or otherwise) are actually Irish!

So help me, I think I'm going to get as unreasonably offended as I possibly can. I do not at all believe that the Native American related mascots are meant to be offensive in any way. I think it is meant as a testament to their toughness, battle prowess, and noble fighting spirit, even in the face of the brutal American Imperialism of the 19th century. I believe the real problem is a minority of oversensitive, idle, opportunistic people who seek not to be reasonable, but to be in control, to make organizations and powerful people cow to their demands with baseless charges of racism.

I find it all absurd.

As absurd as USC coming back in the final seconds to beat the Irish.

No wonder I'm cranky.
